About
Quercus suber is the Latin name for what we know as “cork.”
Quercus is becoming more and more a part of the average person’s everyday life.
Cork has been used as bottle stoppers in wines and other beverages as well as in the soles of various sandals and shoes for a long time.
Today it is being used, quiet prolifically, to make high quality eco-friendly flooring.
Okay, so why use cork for flooring - and why is it so fashionable?
When one thinks about the cork in their wine bottle it seems like an unlikely candidate for a flooring material. However, the cork employed in the manufacturing of cork flooring is different. The processes raw cork goes through to become a bottle stopper verses flooring are distinct.
Cork is sustainable substance.
This is the case because cork trees do not have to be chopped down for their material. The cork extracted from the only tree which produces it, the Cork Oak, is not made of cork itself, as wood is in the case of say, timber. Rather, the cork material emanates from the bark of the oak instead.
This means that when commercially harvesting cork, Cork Oaks do not have to be felled in great numbers devastating forests and taking away some of the best CO2 absorbers on the planet. Therefore, products made of cork, such as flooring, are environmentally friendly.
Another reason why cork is becoming one of the trendiest types of flooring is its insulation properties.
Cork is an exceptional insulator and thus great in the winter for keeping warm air in and cold air out, and vice versa in the summertime. Plus, the flooring itself becomes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, which is a very nice feature unique to cork.
This not only makes your home or office more comfortable to be in year-round, but it also effectively reduces energy costs. It’s a win-win situation.
In addition, cork is fire-retardant and extremely resistant to insect invasions. One of the main reasons cork trees live for several hundred years at a time is because their cork can withstand most forest fires. Its bark it very difficult to ignite due to its unique internal makeup. Likewise, Cork Oaks have such long lifespans because almost all insects find their bark impenetrable.
These are clearly advantageous qualities to have in a floor.
The reasons why cork flooring is so well-liked go on and on. But, the point is: Those who really do their research find it hard to rule cork out as a top option for their floor.
